Touchdown Turnaround / Hello Goodbye
On Saturday night Aiden and I had a grand plan of making our own sushi. My father had purchased a Sushi Maker Pro from a Sonoma County Fair in 1999, the last time my sisters and parents were all in California at the same time, and upon finding it in the basement recently he had no qualms about letting me have it. This should have been my first clue.
But we went ahead with planning and researching and arrived with foods, recipes, and naive hope in our hearts ready to make the most excellent sushi ever.
The first rationale behind our planning is that sushi would be so much cheaper if we made it ourselves. This is about the same as all the people who feel that spending $45 on a brazillian wax is excessive, as yet they have never tried successfully performing one on themselves. The outcome is quite the same as well: sticky mess … but i get ahead of myself.
The food turned out to be a little expensive. We started out spending just as much as we would have. Plus tip. And we had not yet been fed.
The second, third, and fourth through seventh ideas are all a little foggy now as i’m quite sure that the smokey fug left behind from our event will never quite eradicate itself from my apartment. But again, i get ahead of myself.
The rice was, at first, too cruncy. So we added more water. When it was finally soft (something that was supposed to take 20 minutes and ended up taking an hour) it was too mushy. And the seaweed wouldn’t stick to it. So aiden went to the Chinese restaurant down the road and bought a box of plain rice. And we started again.
The seaweed made everything taste funny so we tried making california rolls. But those wouldn’t stay together at all. Except the very very small ones. So we tried tempura frying those. And this is where the smokey fug comes into play. Boiling oil to the right temperature … not as easy as it would seem.
I conceded defeat when the only time we could stop laughing was when we were coughing, all the while trying to find more windows to open.
Pizza was ordered, alcohol was consumed, and the kitchen was cleaned. And i learned that there are many things that i love about aiden, but one of the most important things that i loved about him on saturday is that in his situation, one could have been quite angry, furious even … but he laughed. He knew when to give up. He laughed about it and we moved on.
Which honestly, made the night quite a success in my book.
That’s hilarious! I love those food experiments goign bad. It’s actually a lot of fun and it makes the ordered food so much better!
Well, it won’t probably happen, but if you ever go to Banff (which is a huge hub of Japanese Tourism), there’s a nice little sushi restaurant with relatively cheap stuff served on an electric train going around the bar!
Fun for the whole you!
I want to write a comment about how great it is to be with a guy that can laugh when things could be tense…but I can’t get over the $45 Brazillians. You’re kidding, right? They are $75 for a partial here and $100 for a full. I want to be where you are, if only for the price of grooming.
WHERE ARE YOU GETTING THEM DONE? I’m dead serious, $45 is including the $10 tip that i feel is necessary when someone other than my boyfriend has to look at my down there.
I seriously need to move out of my area. It’s $35-$40 to start for a standard. $65-$75 if they leave a strip. $100 if it’s all off. Then add the $15-$20 tip!
It’s slightly cheaper in Manhattan, but not $45 cheap! $70 for full here is a bargain.
