can’t hide it

I’m So Excited / The Pointer Sisters
I was trying to think back over my almost 10 years of having been employed about whether I have ever actually enjoyed a job that I have had. All I can come up with are my embarrassing jobs that I can kind of laugh about now. Like when I worked at Kmart… and the fact that I worked at Kmart probably wasn’t quite as embarrassing as the fact that while working at Kmart I dated my manager (to make this story slightly less embarrassing, at least he was only 5 years older than me). Nothing says white trash more than working at Kmart and dating your manager.
Or when I worked as a lifeguard. At the offset everyone thinks that being a lifeguard is so awesome. You get to sit in the sun, you don’t have to wear pants or shoes, and you get breaks every hour where you get to sit around with your co-workers – who are all about the same age as you – and eat employee-discount junk food.
But the very first thing that sucks about being a lifeguard is that kids shit in the pool. Nothing takes the fun out of a day like fishing for kid poo with a plastic bag while the other lifeguards are on hand with the Comet to sprinkle around the area – as if that will do anything – and keep people out of the pool for 30 minutes. GLAMorous.
And then that swimming is a sport for fat people and children. Yes, there are those people who swim in the masters clinic who are in good shape and are the least likely to drown. The people who you have to worry about are squirmy, small and stupid or the size of a Hummer. They can train you to be prepared to save drowning kids, but no amount of training can help you save something that even a forklift couldn’t get out of the water.
but i guess the most embarrassing jobs were the ones that were the most fun. you were in it together with your co-workers, your bosses were always pathetic so you had endless things to make fun of them about, and the pay always sucked for everyone. having an embarrassing job is kind of like high school, everyone goes through it and you are almost always better for it.
that just doesn’t make it ok that i worked at kmart and dated my manager, does it.
