Silent Night
my parents were a little late in getting a tree this year and so my dad asked me to come over early for christmas eve dinner so that i could trim the tree for them. i spent about an hour going through several boxes of ornaments with beth trying to spread them out evenly while also keeping the plush and delicate ornaments out of any areas my parents’ springer spaniel could reach. around the time aiden was getting there we had finished.
“that looks really nice.” aiden complimented. “but it seems to be missing the top.” beth and i explained to aiden that my dad had always been the only member of the family who was tall enough to do it and it had become tradition to have dad do it last. my mom had already gotten into the wine and dad was setting out the tapas so this part of the decorating was forgotten until just after dessert when beth reminded dad.
mom, of course, stood back to let dad know when the angel was centered properly and aided by the wine kept criticizing to be funny. finally dad had her arranged and stood back. ”She has a tree up her ass, what do you expect her to look like?” Dad asked mom. Mom retorted: ”It looks more like she has a tree up her -”
“Well, we won’t be bringing the grandkids around here when they’re small and impressionable.” I said to Aiden.
“Ha! You’ll be changing your tune once you actually have children. You’ll be BEGGING us to teach them bad words just to get away from them.”
Ah, the holidays. Happy Christmas everyone!
